Wellington & Crazy Winds | New Zealand Day 6+7

Friday, January 2, 2015

If you were to ask me about my first impressions of Wellington I would say immediately that it was windy. How do you even go about daily life in so much wind! I asked a local if this was considered a normality and they confirmed that it was. I don't even want to know what a 'windy' day in Wellington actually is. My skin became horribly dry to the point where it hurt to smile so constant moisturisation throughout the day was a must. Thank you Clinique Dramatically Different moisturiser. You had served me well.

We soldiered through the weather and visited the Museum of New Zealand. It was nature-y, historical and sci-ency. Everything you need in a museum.

After a quick trip to the museum we grabbed some much needed lunch at a popular cafe in Wellington's main dining strip. Despite Wellington's small size, it definitely seems like hipster and quirky cafes and restaurants were a plenty. It was reminiscent of Melbourne. (Although at that point I had never been to Melbourne)

We took the cable cars up to the botanical gardens...

...and sat in some old cable cars set up at the museum on the top of the gardens. Apologies for the lack of nature-y photos. It was winter and there was a lot left to be desired at the botanical gardens. Had I come in Spring I would have snapped many more photos.

Come evening, we were on the hunt for some dinner and stumbled across a night market in one of the alleys. We had some tasty spirally cake with nutella filled in the middle for our dessert.

We called it a night after our night time stroll because we had to wake up SUPER early to catch the early ferry over to the South Island.

The next morning was the first day we experienced a bit of gloomy weather. The Interislander was a massive ferry that we took which could hold hundreds of cars. There was entertainment on board, a bar and a dining section. Nothing too glamorous but was more than I expected. However, we basically just took naps on the sofas for a good part of the trip.

Our goal for that day was basically to get as close to Fox Glacier as we humanly could. Or at least as far as Danny could drive without sleeping on the wheel. (Unlicensed useless human here) I believe our goal was towards Greymouth and we had only booked a motel the night before while we still had some wifi.

The drive was picturesque but we had little time to stop and marvel. And, if we thought that drive was beautiful, we were absolutely gobsmacked further down our journey towards Queenstown BUT more on that next time!
